Staying In Inverness And Three Delightful Visitor Attractions to Visit
Inverness, a city in the Highlands of Scotland is situated in some of the finest countryside in Scotland. In and around the city are many places associated with historic Scotland, often these sites lay witness to an immeasurable amount of violence and suffering. Of course the city of Inverness has a fantastic number of visitor attractions (and the number is always increasing). Below I discuss 3 places to visit in Inverness Inverness Museum & Art Gallery, Inverness Castle and Beauly Priory:
Beauly Priory
It was in the Thirteenth century that Monks, from the Valliscaulian order, first set up a community at Beauly Priory. Sadly nobody can state the accurate date of foundation but it is usually agreed that is was around the year 1230. At that time the patron, and landowner, of Beauly, was Sir John Bisset, whose lands were almagamated with the Fraser’s of Lovat. Sir John Bisset and the French monks are those who named the community Beauly, coming from the French words for beautiful place. Unfortunately, Beauly Priory became derelict following the Scottish Reformation of 1582 and stone from the walls were utilized in the construction of other structures in the area. Today Beauly Priory (ruins) are in the care of Historic Scotland having been handed over to the state in 1913.
Inverness Castle
There have been many structures on the site of Inverness Castle through the centuries, as far back as 1057 there was something there. King Robert I almost destroyed the very first Inverness Castle. The current castle was designed and constructed by William Burn in 1836. The beautiful building, of red sandstone, hold a prominent position high on a cliff gazing down onto the River Ness and the cathedral on the opposite side. King James I, of Scotland, held parliament in Inverness Castle in 1427, and called all the Northern Chieftains to be in attendance. Shockingly 3 of these chieftains were later condemed to death for asserting an independent sovereignty.
Inverness Museum
Found in the Center of Inverness is the newly renovated Inverness Museum and Art Gallery which is really worth visiting especially if it is raining. Inside the museum it is possible to investigate Scottish History and find out how the Highlands are associated with the rest of the world. It is also possible to learn about the folk of the Highlands, their environment and traditions. There are many different exhibitions featuring, archaeology, wildlife, crafts, fine arts, costumes and textiles.
