Should we be allowed to view social network sites while at work?
Yes, were at our jobs to work and earn money, but if you’ve gotten bored how can you produce your best work if you’ve switched onto ‘automatic pilot’?
Email in the office is a great way to do this, its discreet and you can pretend your answering an email from a client to help stave off boredom. Surely a joke or brief chat via email with a friend can put you in a good mood and therefore help increase your productivity, because when your in a bad mood, the first thing that suffers is the task your in the middle of doing. Some people have lost their jobs in very public cases regarding sent emails, with ‘questionable’ content, raising the concerns managers have for their staff emailing when they should be working.
But who doesnt send the odd email at one time or another? Is it really that much of a danger, or are our managers just afraid we spend all day emailing each other and wont work at all? Most people seem to have the balance right, and will actually get on with their work, but will answer the emails from their friends and still get their work done.
Social networking sites are a different matter altogether. The social networking site has taken off all over the world, and is banned in the workplace at some offices, through fear of workers sitting on it most of the day. Facebook is different to emaill due to its live chat feature, which can result in people getting lost in a conversation for some time. But are people really spending all day on this website? Updating their status and commenting on pictures?
I think the main thing with these features is moderation. The key is not overdoing it and not letting it overtake your works prodcutivity, but most people are sensible enough not to let this happen -arent we?
