Canada’s Ski Season Ruined
Some people are calling it the worst season in 10 years after incredibly bad snowfall and poor skiing conditions left the slopes empty. People taking holidays in Canada this year got something of let down.
Canada is known all around the world for being the place find great snow and perfectly formed pistes.Hoards of people head to the Rockies every year in search of their snow fix and the resort of Whistler is practically a house hold name. This past season did not provide the usual delights that people expect however.
A -30 degree period of very high pressure halted any snowfall before Christmas and meant that the slopes were pretty bare in high season. When the low pressure came the snow didn’t really come with it.There were little bits of snowfall here and there of about 3-5cm but it didn’t hang around and it is difficult to ride on that amount anyway. When interviewing people at the resorts, one man said “it’s been borderline terrible”. He had managed to make it out to Castle the previous week but found that when he arrived the slopes were exposed with zero cover.“I maybe got 4 days of riding out of 14, that’s not good”. Another visitor said that she decided to ditch the skiing in favour of doing some sightseeing on one of the local company’s polar bear holidays.
This uncharacteristic lack of snow has led some to point the finger at global warming; suggesting that atmospheric pressures are all over the place lately and weather is becoming increasing unreliable. This argument is brought into question however when you consider that many of the American resorts and most of those in Europe have just had one of the best seasons in their history.Bad luck is what most visitors put it down to and hope for better fortunes next season
